Proyect
MAMA WASI Vilcabamba
The geography is very rugged in the Peruvian Andes, especially
in Vilcabamba. The large distances and difficult terrain between
the indigenous villages and the populated centers, the cultures,
traditions and minimum access to information about maternal
health. Problemens of discrimination against women and exclusion
of information to women, plus conditions of poverty, lead to a
high percentage of indigenous pregnant mothers that don´t have
safe or high quality attention in the final phases of pregnancy,
especially during labour, increasing the number of deaths of the
mothers and children
of these towns.
Peru is a multicultural country, each culture having its own
characteristics. Consistently, conceptual conflicts originated
in the development of societies. The organitión Lazos Solidarios
understands how to be inter-cultural and to have mutual respect,
to compliment the knowledge of the ancestors and the scientific
advances for getting these objectives. We value life and justice
and with this project we will to contribute to the welfare of
the family, of the women and of the future participants of
society.
WHAT IS MAMA WASI?
Mama Wasi is a Quechua term (language native to Peru), that
means the House for mothers. Consequently, it is a shelter or
temporary lodging ( 2 to 3 weeks) for pregnant women, companions
the mothers may choose(partner, mother, other family), who are
permitted to access the health services system in the week
before delivery, to get a safe and quality birthing process, in
the local health center, and in this way, contribute to the
prevention of mother deaths and peri- natal deaths, principally
in rural areas.
It is importad to clarify that the House for pregnant women is
not an extension of health services and should not be confused
with a hospital room. For those taking advantage of this stay,
there are different workshops offered; such as educative
workshops, pregnancy prevention workshops, workshops for cooking
with local products with the purpose of teaching the value of
these foods, and health workshops that contribute to the
adoption of healthy behaviors.
FOR WHOM IS MAMA WASI?
A house for expecting mothers should offer the opportunity to
access a health center with the capacity to attend to all
pregnant women in the distant communities or the areas with
little access. The purpose of this program is that these women
will have the opportunity to receive appropriate care in labour,
and to obtain the necessary reference for assistance to be
carried out in a major health center that has the capacity to
care for obstetric and neonatal emergencies at all times that a
risky situation or a complication should present itself at any
moment in the pregnancy , above all in the period of labour and
postpardum.
ADVANTAGES OF MAMA WASI:
Allows the access of pregnant women to a health system and
consequently the close observation of their personal health.
Contributes to cover the cost of labour in a health institution.
Helps prevent the death of mother or baby.
Contributes to generating a favourable attitude towards a
healthy pregnancy in the communities, sharing responsibility and
forming a net of solidarity
Permits developing educational programs ( through workshops)
for health, and include other activities with the pregnant
women, so they are productive during the time they are waiting.
Permits participation of families with the care and feeding,
offering more security for the pregnant women
Use the installation of the other activities in the centers.

MOSOQ WAWA
Human
development has many factors which are closely related with the
education and health of the population. Our concern for children
is fundamental for the future of the people. In order to achieve
the objectives, the children have to develop and improve their
intellectual, physical, psychological and social skills.
EARLY
STIMULATION
While the human body is growing and developing prenatally and in
the first years of life, it needs good healthy food and external
stimulus in a continuous and systematic way, in order to develop
and increase its physical, psychological and social skills and
abilities.
For this reason, early stimulation is a comprehensive and
sequential act to realize the child’s abilities. This will lead
to his or her future success in his or her society.
EARLY STIMULATION IN RURAL COMMUNITIES
In rural and native communities, early childhood stimulation is
rare and precarious, generally due to the parents’ lack of
information about the importance of early stimulation which is
integral to proper development. Also, the parents must go to
work with the children staying home and being looked after by
their older sisters, who are generally girls of school age, and
can only provide a small proportion of the stimulation needed by
the child. There is no early stimulation program in schools in
rural communities.
WHAT IS MOSOQ WAWA?
MOSOQ WAWA is a Quechua word (Quechua is the main native
language of Peru) that means “NEW CHILD”. Wawa refers to a
child under 6 years of age. The early stimulation project
MOSOQ WAWA is for these children under 6 years of age, who
live in the Vilcabamba village of Lucma. This project will have
two groups:
1)
For children under 3 years of age who have started their
stimulation in a project called “Mama Wasi” (Mother
House)
2)
For children of pre-school age, between the ages of 3 and 6. The
teaching methods we are going to use at this age will be
complemented with plastic art, music, theatre, dance and
ecology.
In addition to the cognitive development of the children, they
will receive medical attention, the monitoring and control of
growth and development and the fortification of their diet with
native products. Parents will be taught monthly in child
development and nutrition, using the native products that they
produce themselves.
MOSOQ
WAWA PROJECT OBJECTIVES
To develop the intellectual, physical and social skills of the
children in Lucma, Vilcabamba.
To fight against the social and educational exclusion of the
people who live in rural and native communities.
To introducing and consolidate the MOSOQ WAWA project as a pilot
project for evaluation. At a later date we will be able to take
these experiences and knowledge to other rural and native
communities.
Development of the rural community in the Lucma area.
ADVANTAGES OF THE MOSOQ WAWA PROJECT
The systematic and continuous stimulation of children from
gestation (Mama Wasi) up to 6 years of age (Mosoq Wawa).
The integral development of the childrens’ skills and abilities.
Control and monitoring of growth, development and nutrition of
the children.
Protection and care of the children during their participation
in Mosoq Wawa.
The project will be carried out by professional staff competent
in child education.
Making rural communities aware of the importance of childhood
education and a healthy diet.
